São Martinho Unit is the first sugarcane ethanol producer in the world to achieve ISCC CORSIA certification
The São Martinho Unit (USM), located in Pradópolis (SP), the world’s largest sugarcane processor, is also the first sugarcane ethanol producer in the world to achieve ISCC CORSIA certification.

The achievement certifies that the ethanol produced by the unit from sugarcane processing does not generate greenhouse gas emissions related to the Indirect Impact of Land Use (iLUC).

iLUC is linked to indirect changes in land use, such as deforestation or conversion of agricultural land, which can occur when significant areas of land are displaced for the production of raw materials for biofuels.

With this pioneering certification, the São Martinho Unit is able to supply sugarcane ethanol with reduced carbon intensity for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). In addition, the company now has the largest certified area in Brazil under this scope of ISCC – International Sustainability and Carbon Certification.

“This system certifies sustainable, traceable, deforestation-free and climate-friendly supply chains, reinforcing São Martinho’s commitment to sustainability and the energy transition to a low-carbon economy,” says Luís Gustavo Teixeira, São Martinho’s Agricultural and Technology Director.

Teixeira explains that the certification attests to and recognizes São Martinho’s excellence in the development and adoption of innovative and sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to the promotion of regenerative, low-impact and high-yield agriculture.

“The certification recognizes that we are able to produce sugarcane ethanol using practices and technologies that boost agricultural productivity while reducing emissions. These are pioneering practices adopted by the company, such as soil preparation with localized ridges, the use of bio-inputs, biological control of pests and diseases, localized vinasse application and the optimization of sugarcane nutrition through the efficient use of industrial by-products, reinforcing the circular economy and promoting nutrient recycling,” explains Teixeira.

The achievement of ISCC CORSIA Low LUC Risk also reinforces the company’s progress in its journey to contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation industry, towards the construction of a cleaner air transport matrix, in line with the best agro-industrial practices.

ISCC certifications

The ISCC CORSIA Low LUC certification obtained by the São Martinho Unit adds to the ISCC EU and ISCC CORSIA Plus certifications already achieved by the Pradópolis unit and also by the Santa Cruz Unit, located in Américo Brasiliense (SP). ISCC is the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification System, recognized by the European Commission and which promotes the use of energy from renewable sources.

ISCC EU certification demonstrates compliance with environmental, social, traceability and greenhouse gas emission reduction criteria compared to the fossil equivalent. ISCC CORSIA PLUS certification demonstrates compliance with the sustainability criteria for CORSIA-eligible fuels to reduce CO2 emissions from international flights.
